A Ukrainian man detonated two hand grenades in a courtroom in Nikopol, Ukraine, on Thursday, killing himself and one of the defendants, and injuring nine others. According to BBC, local media reported the trial was for the murder of the man’s son and one other person in February 2016, when the three defendants allegedly shot them with automatic weapons. Two of the defendants were injured in the explosion, as were two guards, a court official and civilians.
Police spokesman Yaroslav Trakalo said the man detonated the grenades at 11:20 a.m. local time, Ukrainska Pravda news reported. At the time of the explosions, guards were handcuffing the defendants as the hearing was being adjourned.
An armed conflict in eastern Ukraine began in April 2014, after Russia annexed Crimea from the country. Illegal weapons sales have increased since the conflict began, according to Deutsche Welle.
